Mistral Gave Away a 1-Trillion-Parameter Model

Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed "Le Chonk", on October 29, 2026: one trillion parameters and about 1 TB of files on Hugging Face. The Decoder, citing SGLang's docs, says the standard version runs on eight Nvidia B300 GPUs. Mistral says it is the best open-weight model for coding and that it handles legitimate defensive security tasks "without unnecessary refusals". Its own post also says "we see a potential for uplift to conduct real attacks" and that it is modifying its guardrails. It is free under a modified MIT license; a company running a Model-as-a-Service business needs a separate commercial license from Mistral.
