Toyota Will Build Waymo’s Next Robotaxi

Waymo and Toyota said on October 30, 2026 that Toyota will build Waymo's next robotaxi: a custom version of its electric bZ4X (called the BZ in North America), made at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Japan, with Waymo's self-driving hardware fitted in the same plant. The companies plan to begin operations to test and validate a fleet in Japan in 2027, with the United Kingdom and other Waymo markets planned for the following years. Waymo says the cars are made for riders, with generous rear legroom, automatic doors, a power liftgate and ambient lighting, and that the two will keep exploring Waymo's technology for personally owned Toyota vehicles.
